I've got an old teddy bear from my childhood sitting on the window ledge in my living room, and I have to say, he's not doing too badly for a stuffed animal that's only a few months younger than me. In kind of a reversal of The Velveteen Rabbit story, this old bear survived my childhood because I had a number of other stuffed toys I was more fond of. Consequently, they're the ones that were loved so much their button eyes popped off and their stuffing leaked out. Or in one memorable case of consuming an entire bag of potato chips and a full tub of sour cream dip as a grade schooler, being thrown up on. Let's face it: growing up can be messy. And things happen along the way that leave their mark. Yet the fact that this bear survived those years intact and wasn't relegated to the trash heap makes me feel a fond affinity for him. Because, you see, I managed to go the distance, too,...making it through a bout with cancer and a back surgery and a few major life changes. Apparently, I'm a survivor, just like my fuzzy friend, and I'm learning it's going to take more than a few hard knocks...or even an entire bag of potato chips and a full tub of sour cream dip to keep me down!
That's why I found myself eyeing these stunning Miu Miu black velour clogs with a certain wistfulness. They would certainly get a workout were they in my possession. And I do love any variation on the clog theme, especially the way some designers have taken this basic casual shoe and dressed it up. There's something about velour and velvet and other similar materials that makes me think of that old teddy bear. I didn't wear him out back in the day. But he's welcome company now, a piece of my childhood I've reclaimed and am carrying with me now that I'm older. Plus, he's real good for hugging occasionally, too!
