Anyone here remember their high school English? One of William Shakespeare's most famous sonnets begins thusly:
When in disgrace with Fortune and men's eyes,
I all alone beweep my outcast state,
And trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries,
And look upon myself and curse my fate.
At the time I was coming up through the public school system, there were none of the modern miracles we take for granted today. No internet to bring the world to our doors. No search engines to answer our impenetrable questions. No Wikipedia to make everything clear. So when I found myself puzzling over the reference to "bootless cries" in Mrs. Dishman's 5th hour Shakespeare class, there were no easy explanations to come by.
Obviously times have changed. I'm all grown up now. And with the weight of experience and a myriad of life lessons behind me, I can well imagine what the author was talking about. On clog site after clog site I've encountered the most devastatingly delightful clog boot designs. From the elegant jodhpurs and knee highs of Swedish Hasbeens to the street smart hipness of No. 6 to the sturdy, practical concoctions from the workshops of Sanita, I've found plenty to fill my heart with desire...and frustration. The desire part is obvious. The frustration comes from the fact that I have a larger foot and apparently require a shoe one or two sizes larger than all of these clog boot makers provide. As much as I love clogs (well documented here, I'd say) and as much as I love the thought of a leather boot with a wooden sole, I have been for years and remain to this day...bootless.
Don't worry. I won't bother you or deaf heaven with my cries.
But I will share with you an assortment of pictures I've found on the web or that readers of this blog have sent me, picutres that have helped tide me over until the day that Fortune makes it possible for me to put this outcast state behind me. They say if you want your life to be different, envision that future you want to someday inhabit. Photos like these have helped keep the fire for clog boots burning in my heart. And I can tell you that I think I've found a solution to my lack of these idealized shoes. A solution that will put a perfectly fitting pair on my feet that live up to a myriad of my desires.
But more about that anon!
