It's December 21st. And whether you're indulging in the weeklong Roman bacchanal of Saturnalia...or joining the Zuni and Hopi in waking the sun from its long slumber with the ceremony of Soyal...or coaxing the Japanese sun goddess Amaterasu out of her cave to socialize with the other gods for another year...or celebrating the birth of Mithra to recognize the defeat of darkness by the light in the Iranian festival of Shab-e Chelleh...or merely regarding it as nothing more than the official beginning of winter, it is the turning point in our annual progression of the seasons. Moving forward the days will grow longer and longer until culminating in the approximately 14-1/2 hours of daylight my neighbors and I will enjoy at our latitude on the summer solstice six months from now. But before those delightful idyllic days arrive, there's the more pressing issue of how to keep our toes warm and our feet (and minds) happy until then.
Submitted for your consideration are two cozy looking clogs I recently spotted on eBay. Regular followers of this blog recognize that I'm quite often a pushover for anything with the Miu Miu label on it, and this pair of high heeled shearling lined clogs is no exception. The style was released in an open heel version, but we're officially in the season of winter here in the northern hemisphere. Living in the land of the wind chill factor means occasionally bowing to necessity. And I have no doubt that this brown suede pair would do quite nicely in keeping my feet warm through the slush filled months ahead. (Photos provided by eBay seller rc-fifth-ave.)
On the other, it may be possible to take a good thing too far. A case in point would be these vintage clogs posted by 7beauty4ashes.
These are a pair of shoes whose heart is definitely in the right place. And clearly they were loved passionately by their previous owner judging from the wear on the soles. My instincts tell me this pair of faux wood wedges probably dates from the platform loving days of the 1970s. It's a period I lived through and knew well, yet looking back it's hard to imagine just when and where this brown fur pair would have gotten such a workout. Could someone have actually worn them that often? I can't imagine them being a wardrobe staple, but obviously someone did!
