Special thanks to Stefan, an Every Clog Has Its Day fan from Berlin, who recently pointed me toward a pair of vintage Berkemann clogs on the German eBay site. "Berkemann," he writes,"was the clog and sandal manufacturer in the '70s and '80s, and despite their higher price (compared to no name copies), they were [quite] popular over here. Probably 1 out of 3 kids or teenagers wore clogs back then, many of them being Berkemann 'Toeffler'!" Quite a different story from here in the U. S. where clogs received a more guarded reception and still suffer an unfortunate stigma dating from their roots in post-hippie, platform shoe culture of that time. Berkemann is a brand revered by clog wearers outside of America, and Stefan is not the only visitor to this blog that has mentioned that brand. Today we have an opportunity to take a peek at what the fuss was about. And clearly the Berkemann name was synonymous with craftsmanship, quality, and attention to detail.
Special thanks, too, to eBay seller dietmarboehm for permitting the use of these photos.
