What is fashion? Nothing less than sartorial alchemy! With a few well chosen bits of cloth and leather designers can transport from the tedious reality of where we find ourselves now into some more alluring alternate reality we'd like to find ourselves in in the future. And I'm always amazed at how designers pull this off by basically reinventing what we already know in the here and now. When a shoe maker rolls out a new style, they can't really stray very far from the hard and fast rules of the footwear world. It's got to have a sole. It's got to have some means of keeping it on your feet. And there has to be a mirror image pair of them. For clog makers you have to add in a few additional restrictions. Like a thicker platform to the sole. Or wood in the construction. And nail heads or staples to hold it all together. So when a designer of clogs shows up on the scene with a pair that startles me with their originality, I do get a bit excited. Somehow by playing with the tools of their trade they're able to cast a tried and true look in a whole new light. A good example is the recently offered Matisse style named Emmy. Available in three different color combos, I found all of them intriguing thanks to that oversize button detail. And don't miss that bit of stitching tucked up under the heel. Details. Details. Details. They're what makes a shoe more than just something to walk on. They make it possible to slip on a pair and take flight.
